Cat's Feeble First Attempt at a Video Blog

Hi Guys,

Well, after my last blog post waded into some fairly heavy territory, I thought perhaps it was time to lighten things up a bit, so this is something completely different!

I've actually gotten sucked into the world of YouTube recently, and I'm thinking that I might try my hand at it, but since I'm such a Luddite, it's gonna take me a while to sort out all of the technical stuff. And since I totally suck at learning things for the sake of learning them, and I seem to require little exercises to get myself to actually do things rather than just think about them, I decided that rather than leaping into one of my many ideas for a meaningful YouTube channel, I'd just experiment with it for a bit by doing a few video blog posts.

And you all get to be my guinea pigs... you lucky devils, you!

So, I made a little YouTube video describing all of the exciting things I've been up to recently. It sorta got cut off at the end... did I mention I don't have a clue what I'm doing? Well anyway, for your viewing pleasure:

Anyhoo... hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving that was (ahem) a bit more restful than mine was. Perhaps the universe just wanted to remind me that I ought to be grateful for hot water and indoor plumbing? Seriously, folks, I tried to boil water on the stove to take a bit of a bath, and after an hour of shuttling every pot in the house from the kitchen to the bathroom, I managed to get a whole 4 inches of water into the tub. OY! At least my crazy closet full of bottles of water came in handy with the water shut off for several days.

So that's the news from the funny farm! I hope my video at least serves as amusement!

Hugs to you all!
-Cat

  1. I’m so sorry about the busted water heater and the resulting even-larger pipe project. But your video is wonderful, and your wry humor is a delight. I’m still laughing over The Land of Good Intentions Gone Bad, and Jasper’s butt! Two thumbs up!

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed my little adventure. And as miserable as this whole experience is, at least it did get me to clean up the basement!

  2. Ugh, sorry about your water problems. It was nice to "meet" your voice and shadow! :) I think your first video attempt went well (mostly the audio was great, which is one of my pet peeves--I hate it when the audio is bad!).

    1. Well, that was done on my phone. I think I'll try the real camera next time and maybe the video will be better.

  3. Glad you got the water sorted- though boo to whoever installed gas valves not water!
Enjoyed the video and seeing your kitties properly :)

    1. I know, right? But it could have been worse. They could have messed up the gas line or something! And I suppose I did need something to push me over the edge to finally deal with the rotting plumbing in this house.

  4. Wow, they can replace all your pipes in one day? Since you have a basement, are they all in the house rather than under the house, and so there's relatively easy access? Mine apparently go under my slab foundation.

We recently had to boil water, but only for consumption (the water treatment plant was clogging too fast from flood waters churning the river we get our water from). So we still had hot showers. I might go for just enough hot water for sponge baths. Hmm, but hair washing would be tough.

In video news, nice first attempt! It plays when I click it and it's totally focused and totally easy to hear. And your cats might be pleased to appear to have laser vision!

    1. Pretty amazing. They pretty much got them all in today. They have to come back tomorrow to finish replacing the fixtures and a few odds and ends, but it's mostly done. I think it would have taken much longer if I'd had copper pipe installed instead of PEX.

I still have mixed feelings about plastic pipes - it smelled pretty bad when they were installing everything, but the water smells fine. So here's hoping my filter will get rid of anything that leaches into the drinking water, and seriously, looking at the yuck that was inside of those old galvanized pipes, it's hard to imagine that the water quality could be any worse than what I had before!

And Jasper did look a bit like the devil spawn with those glowing eyes, didn't he? Poor little guys, they were quite terrified by all of the horrible noises. At least they had each other to huddle with.

  5. Another adventure in owning a house. :( The video was good especially for a phone. However, I was so distracted by hearing your voice for the first time, I didn't pay much attention to anything else. Your voice, that has been in my head all of these years while I read your words, was different than what I heard. Gonna need some time to adjust. Not that it was bad, just different. It's funny how I had a specific voice for you even though I didn't know it until I heard your real one.

    1. Hahaha! Well, I'm sorry to shatter your illusions with my actual voice. You know, it's funny, I have the same reaction whenever I hear my own voice on a recording. After years in the music world I should know by now that your voice always sounds completely different on a recording than it does to you - something about how sound waves move differently through your body when you're the one speaking. Anyhow, it always throws me when I hear my voice. I think "Do I really sound like that?"

Actually, that makes me think of a funny story. Years ago a friend of mine recorded a song that I wrote. She was a local star of sorts, and had a great voice. Anyhow, one night we were hanging out at her place and we were goofing off by calling my apartment and singing to my cat through the answering machine.

So... the next morning I was listening to all of the silly messages and when I heard myself singing all I could think was how terrible I sounded - this note was a little flat, I rushed the tempo a bit there... yadda, yadda, yadda. Then I got to the end of the message where we started talking and I suddenly realized that it wasn't me that was singing, it was actually my friend. I listened to message again knowing that it was her and not me, and suddenly all of my criticisms melted away and I just thought it sounded fabulous like she always did. That was a lesson! Apparently I really am much more critical of myself than I am of other people!
