Spring Storm

Well folks, we got a fair amount of snow here in the Mile High city. It's finally starting to taper off, but it snowed pretty hard for about 36 hours. Fortunately it's so warm, that most of it melted on impact, so there's only about 8 inches out there... mostly on grassy spots.

Anyhow, I went out for a walk to snap a few photos for you. Not much accumulation...

The streets themselves are totally clear.

It was a very heavy snow though... this poor little evergreen looks a bit worse for wear.

But as I feared, the crabapple trees took the brunt of it. The neighborhood is full of scenes that look like this:

And those poor blossoms...

I hope some of the tulips will survive though...

And the squirrels don't seem to have suffered too much...

But my neighbors made the best of it...

And at least it's not like it is up in the foothills a few miles to the west where they got 3-5 FEET! Holy Kazoli!

But the sun's coming out now, and the melt is on!

I'm just hoping we don't get too much flooding. CatMan and I have been watching the river gauges on the USGS webpage, and so far it looks like it's only high enough for the bike path to be flooded out at one spot, so hopefully it won't get worse as the melt continues...

Anyhooos.... that's the news from the storm zone! Hope y'all are enjoying more spring like weather than we are!

  1. "Only about 8 inches..." Seems like a lot to me, but I'm glad the streets are clear. I'm not sure what will survive, but I think colorful flowers emerging from the white snow are beautiful.

    1. Well, I haven't gone out today to check for sure, but my neighbors' tree still looks decidedly pink, so I'm hoping some of the blossoms survived.

  2. I going to say exactly the same - those pictures of snow-covered blossoms are very pretty. I guess people weren't growing those for the fruit anyway... were they? Do you have a lot of jelly-makers round your way?

    1. Yup, mostly people grow them for the flowers. We had three crabapple trees in our backyard when I was a kid and one year we did make jelly - problem was, nobody in my family actually eats jelly, so years later when we moved it was all still sitting there in the basement! Oh well, it was fun making it.

  3. Snow is always hard on trees that have leafed out. Sad to see the broken limbs. :( We have had good success with tulips surviving days of snow, so I'm sure you will, too.

    1. The melt is on and it does look like at least some of the tulips made it. Yay!

  4. What a shame that the spring plants are taking such a direct hit from snow and ice. Hopefully, they will rebound where there is no breakage. Still...sad to see all the broken limbs on the trees. I am sure you are ready for spring to really arrive.

    1. You know, I've lived most of my life in Colorado, so I ought to be used to this by now, but it still makes me a little bit crazy - like being teased or something. I spent yesterday watching a patch of snow on my back deck slowly melting away and rooting on the sunshine.

It's supposed to be back up into the 70's by this weekend though, and the plants really are loving all of the moisture.

  5. I thought of you often this past weekend while I was outside enjoying 80 degree days and getting sunburned in the process. We've dropped back to the 60s now which is more "normal" if there is such a thing any more. I have to say it was fun reading this while glancing at your background, what a juxtaposition of the two. :-)

Well, not that things are warming up for you I hope your bike paths don't flood so you and CatMan can enjoy a few rides this week.
