One Last Piece of Kitty Worry to Get Through

With all the craziness in kitty-land over the past three years - Sputty getting sick and dying, Smoky getting sick and almost dying (thankfully he recovered), Princess getting sick and dying, and then the drama of the outdoor kitties - well, one little guy had been getting decidedly neglected.

My Sweet Little Jasper Pea

My plan was to let things settle down a bit and then take him for a checkup after the first of the year. But after noticing his breath was smelling pretty bad, I decided to tackle him and get a good look at his teeth (he's not terribly fond of having his teeth looked at.)

Suffice it to say that what I saw made me pretty sure that I didn't want to wait. So we went in last week and the vet confirmed that 2-3 of his teeth probably need to be extracted.

I sorta knew that his teeth were gonna need to be addressed at some point, but I didn't think it had gotten so bad. Yes... I'm feeling very guilty that my poor little Jasper has probably been in pain for a while because I've been too distracted to check his teeth regularly.

Anyhow, he's scheduled for a dental on Tuesday, and as much as I'm trying to remind myself that this is no big deal, I can't help but worry any time they have to go under anesthesia.

The good news is that his pre-surgery bloodwork came back perfect - including the FIV/FeLV test that I had the vet run just so I can stop worrying that I somehow inadvertently brought the virus inside from Gray Boy.

I am not looking forward to Tuesday, but I am very much looking forward to getting this over with so that I can finally banish the kitty worry monster for a while, and try to remember what it's like to have a life where none of my fur babies is actively engaged in battle with the grim reaper.

Wish us luck!

  1. Jasper will do great on Tuesday and then it will be your turn to rest a little. Constant stress is very tiring. I know you're not religious, but I hope you get to enjoy some of the beauty of the holiday season.

    1. Thanks so much. I'm actually a little less worried about the dental than I normally would be. I guess given the gravity of the other kitty situations that I've faced recently, this seems like much less of a big deal than it normally would.

I am really hoping to enjoy the holidays this year. While I'm not religious, I'm a big sucker for Christmas lights, carols and corny holiday movies. So I'm looking forward to all of those things.

BTW, how is Lucy doing? I'm hoping that you're hangin' in there in kitty land.

      Hugs...

  3. Yes, I will happily wish you luck!

Is there an equivalent to ice cream for kitties after tooth extraction? I guess delicious soft food?

    1. Ha! Well, I fear Jasper is already incredibly spoiled in the kitty treat department... but some chicken baby food might be in order! :-)

  4. This might be just another piece of "evidence" that you did the right thing letting go of the other kitties. We can only do so much, and if you had decided to foster the other two and worrying for weeks about diseases spreading and everything... Jasper would probably have had to wait a good while longer to get his teeth looked at. Not to mention that YOUR health could probably have taken a hit too.

This is meant to come across in a nice way, so if it sounds mean it's really not meant to. :)

    Good luck!

    1. Thanks Maria, I'm totally with you on this one. I tend to pour myself into these sorts of things and then before I know it I'm totally in over my head. And in many ways it really goes against the whole "conscious living" thing that I'm trying to foster in my life right now.

I think, for a while at least, I'm gonna let others take on the task of trying to save all the cats out there, and I'm just gonna focus on myself, and the ones I already have.

Thanks so much for your support!

  6. Good Luck Tuesday, I know Jasper will do fine. And I saw you mention chicken baby food I wish I could give you the three jars I have here. My kids left them here for the baby but he didn't like them and took to table food. Now I have meat baby food I have to get rid of. I also have a stack of canned tuna they left here because my daughter-in-law ate it regularly when she was pregnant.

Anyway, this hopefully will be the end of your kitty problems and you can start to get a good nights rest and be stress free for a while.

    1. God, I hope this will be the end of kitty crisis land for a while because I seriously need a break! Of course, there's supposed to be 3-4 inches of snow on the ground by tomorrow morning, and I have to get Jasper there by 8am... I think it's gonna be a cold and early morning!

BTW - just in case you ever need to know this, if you're gonna give baby food to a cat, you need to make sure that it doesn't contain any onions or garlic because both are toxic to cats. Can't really imagine why you'd need to know that, but just figured I'd share the info just in case!

Anyhow, thanks for your well wishes. I am SOOOO looking forward to this being done and over with!

    2. Ha! You can't resist a little bit of saving other cats! But this advice probably didn't take too much out of you!

      Cheers!

    1. Oh, that's so sweet of you! But honestly, Jasper has more catnip toys than he knows what to do with, so if you'd like to make some toys in his honor, please send them to your local shelter for a kitty who doesn't have any. And thank you so much for you well wishes.
